Ideas for Intentionality 45/52: Is Christmas Pagan?, My Top Parenting Books, and Meaningful Christmas Resources

by Taylor Barrett

Happy Friday,

I got some really good questions this week from you all, here are a couple…

Is Christmas pagan? Should we celebrate Christmas if the Bible doesn’t command us to?

My best advice for discipline (whew, always a hard one to answer) AND what resources have guided me the most with parenting/discipline?

And then, when it comes to tuckering out a toddler, is it better to get outside in the morning or prioritize a baby’s nap?

All great questions! Some of these questions I had to go do some digging, reading, thinking, and praying about. But I answered them all in the Q and A that is dropping today.

I will share more Ideas for Intentionality for you this week as they relate to the questions + a couple of other things we are enjoying:

IDEAS FOR INTENTIONALITY

Christmas Controversy: The Gospel Coalition and Ask Pastor John have been steady resources I turn to over the years to get me started when I am digging on an issue. I like the verses they provide and the stringboard for ideas they give. Here is an article to check out (the last part of it was the most helpful) and this short podcast is great food for thought.

Here are the TOP 4 books I have turned to for help with discipline and parenting (there are probably many more that have been a help. See here for a HUGE reading list of my favs by category, but these are the ones that come to mind MOST)

  1. Triggers
  2. Don’t Make Me Count to Three
  3. Habits for a Household (the discipline chapter wrecked me)
  4. Whole and Healthy Family

Baby Sleep or Toddler in Sunshine?: Spoiler alert, I think sunshine and outside time gets my vote. Even babies need sunshine and outside time.

That is why I love this baby carrier and this stroller (going 9 years strong minus the buckles that have dry rotted out from being in a carport all these years, but is my literal FAVORITE).

Christmas List I Have Been Gathering for You: Here are all the items I have ordered to help me prep for Christmas early! The Nature Christmas wrapping paper is probably my favorite on the list.

Christmas Children’s Books: Changing up the picture books I read is a really sweet way to connect with my children, get extra snuggles, and build a culture of shared stories and inside jokes. Here are a couple of my favorite Christmas ones so far, I would love to hear yours!

  • Christmas Day in the Morning
  • The Christmas Promise
  • The Littlest Watchman

*I would love to hear your Christmas books, music, advent resources, and what you have been enjoying lately! Just hit reply to this email, it really comes to me.

Keeping Jesus at the Center of Christmas – In this blog, I share amazing Advent ideas to explain the meaning behind the season with the kiddos

Sending love,

Lana

P.S. I think I already shared this video with you all, BUT yall I was telling my grandma about how this 101 year old woman is still working! And her wisdom is inspiring!

Pregnant P.S. I got another amazing email this week from a Labor Without Fear mama who put in the time and energy to get ready for her upcoming labor.

Kelsey said:

“I went into labor naturally and was able to get to 8cm dilated without any interventions! I honestly felt like such a rockstar getting to that point. The words from your course were so powerful to help me face the pain and run through it, rather than away from it.”

*I never get tired of hearing your birth stories. Thank you for letting me know how it went, Kelsey! I am rejoicing with you, and I am over here prepping myself since I am 32 weeks pregnant! Want to prep together?

Happy Friday, I don’t know about you, but I can handle a lot of stress up until a certain point, then I just break. Something I heard someone say that has helped me a lot is that stress is not the problem, it’s the management of the stress.  The most freeing thing is realizing that…
